TS009:2019 is a technical specification produced by the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) in conjunction with Secured by Design, which is designed to ‘enhance security and general requirements for letter box assemblies that are free standing or surface mounted and where mail is retrieved from the same side as delivery’.

A British History in Mail & Parcel Security
The Safety Letterbox Company started in 1986 with the launch of our first mailbox product Homeguard, which fits to the rear of a front door and can be fitted with a fire extinguisher to protect the home and its residents. It remains a popular product. Throughout numerous product launches over the years, one has stood out as a firm favourite among domestic customers: the Flaplock. Launched in 2008, the Flaplock can be locked at night or closed off to address the risk of theft and arson. It has proved a success with police and fire services as well as individual households and housing associations around the UK.
The range of letterboxes and parcel boxes we offer includes over 180 individual models with a secure solution for every client, type and location. Working with clients on a daily basis allows us to understand fully their pain points and aspects of the entire delivery process that could be improved.
Secured by Design is a national police crime prevention initiative featuring products known for achieving its rigorous Police Preferred Specification standards.
What is Secured by Design?
SBD is the official police security initiative. Owned by the UK Police Service, its specific aim is to reduce crime and help people live more safely.

SBD works closely with a network of Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs), who are either police officers or police staff based in police forces around the UK, who encourage and advise architects, developers and local authority planners to incorporate police crime prevention measures and principles into the physical security of developments and surrounding environment from initial concept and design through to construction and completion.
These developments are in a wide range of sectors including residential, education, health, sport and leisure as well as retail, commercial, business and industrial. For example, more than one million homes have been built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.
SBD seeks to improve the physical security of buildings using products, such as doors, windows, locks and walling systems that meet SBD’s Police Preferred Specification, which provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime. SBD works with manufacturers and standards authorities to ensure that security standards are current and updated to keep pace with emerging crime trends.

There are currently many hundreds of companies producing thousands of attack resistant crime prevention products, across 30 different crime categories, which have achieved Police Preferred Specification. SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.
